Quite often, my clients hire me for a part of their project. I'll do the window coverings and maybe pick the paint colors. It saves time, effort & money to get a second opinion and we can help with any portion of the design process.

1. Space and project planning - Planning will save you a lot of money. Professional designers will give you ideas on how to efficiently use your space and obtain the finished desired look. A small upfront expense helps avoid costly mistakes.

2. Furniture planning - Furniture is a large part of the budget. If you are re-using furniture or buying new - determine your furniture requirements now. The number of people and activities that will occur in the room (watching TV, reading, eating, etc.). Furniture choices & placement need to accommodate these activities. The desired room style will determine the finishes for the furniture fabrics, flooring, paint colors & window treatments. We like to work with local suppliers to plan and purchase the needed furniture (it helps the local economy & creates community connections), and you have a face-to-face person to work with.

Furniture can take eight weeks to be delivered - so plan ahead. A follow-up phone call with your supplier can make sure of your furniture's progress and help keep your project on time.

3. Flooring - You want the best you can get with your budget....obviously. Spend some time at your local flooring store to see what is available and at what price points. The desired look & use of the space will determine the best flooring choices. Tile will last forever and is wonderful for kitchens, baths, & high-traffic areas. It's more expensive up-front, but cheaper in the long run. Wood adds a wonderful feel to a room, and is easy to clean up - but it does require re-finishing and is not a great choice for bathrooms where water can cause damage. Products that simulate wood or stone are excellent options - producers, such as Anderson flooring, have come a long way in creating a perfect product. Carpet creates a warm and quiet space. A good carpet pad can make up for a less-expensive carpet selection. Flooring will take the biggest beating of any product in your home - CHOOSE IT WELL.

4. Window coverings & fabrics for draperies are usually choosen at this time. Your hard treatments (blinds, shades) can solve your privacy, light control and temperature control needs. 5. Paint color selection and contractor acquisition - We can help pick out your paint colors and make an overall plan. Homes have much more color today and the colors can add significantly to the style and architecture of your home. They can also detract significantly. Getting professional advice will again- save you time & money. We can connect you with contractors who specialize in faux finishes or standard paint. When we help you pick the colors, you get a great looking space, the first time.

6. Light fixtures - The end use of your room will help determine your lighting needs. Reading areas need good, direct light. A good overall light will handle general use activities. The mood lighting is where you can really add to the atmosphere of a space. Dimmers can help in this area - everyone looks and feels better in softer light. We work with licensed, experienced electricians or we can supply the fixtures for the do-it-yourselfers. We will help you find the right fixtures for your needs.

7. Furniture, accessory & art placement - This is the spice of the space. The finished rooms should be an extention of your personality. Will you love to be home or will it never be quite the home you had hoped for. Let's do it right the first time.
